Celi Barbier
Ex Bailaina Solista Ballet Opera de Munique
Celí Barbier was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was 7 years old when began her dance classes (classical dance) at the Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro as disciple of Tatiana Leskova. Later on, she would continue with Leskova at her famous school of dance, in Copacabana. During the time, academic classes followed as normal until graduation by the French Lycée (Rio de Janeiro). But her artistic vein took her also to the Dramatic Art Conservatory - and a premium: a role as the main actress in a movie signed by Mário Borges: ‘Maria Bonita, a Rainha do Cangaço’, a Brazilian theme.
It was in Paris where she would pursuit a future career as a classical dancer. Hard and fruitful work along with Tatiana Granzeva (Ballet de Marseille and Ballet du XXème Siècle), Solange Golovine, Gilbert Mayer e Raymond Franchetti (Opéra de Paris), Yvette Chauviré, étoile mondiale. Invited to a refresher work shop in Roving (former Yugoslavia) by Granzeva, she did so well that the then Bayerische Staatsoper’s ballet director and choreographer offered her a contract there. So, from 1972 to 1981, she worked as his assistant for his choreographies. Among her performances, rehearsals (Ballet Lazer, original music Walter Haupt), the choreography for the Olympic Games 1972, at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Träume, when she creates her own solo and pas de trois, from Charles Rimbaud’s poem, Le Bateau Ivre (original music of Walter Haupt). As for the dance, the Company’s repertoire, with: John Cranko, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Onegin, The Taming of the Shrew. This artistic mix is not over. There are remade pieces by Peter Wrigth personally: Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker (John Neumeier), The Rite of Spring (world première, Glen Tetley). The repertoire would be enriched with more choreographies: Serenade, Symphony in C, Apollon Musagète, Concerto Barocco (George Balanchine), Requiem Canticles (Jerome Robbins).
While keeping dancing, two grateful years were devoted to pedagogic courses – always classical dance – with Michel Delutry and Gustav Blanck, former Ballet director and coreographer at the Staatsballet Hamburg. In 1979, creation of her choreography, Punkt-Kontrapunkt, music of Gioachino Rossini, W. Haupt. Her work on classical dance spreads to respond to the appeal of television, as Les Chansons Dorés, Television German Set, with Claudine Auger and Czechoslovakia National Ballet. L’Histoire du Soldat, choreography and interpretation, with music of Igor Stravinsky and live orchestra. Due to mention Sabine Meyer, after from the Berliner Philarmoniker under Herbert von Karajan. Choreographer, actress, dancer roles sometimes happened altogether. As in Gaîté Parisienne (Jacques Offenbach), for the Residenztheater in Munich, a point of modern dance begins.
1983. She leaves Munich to be the Ballet assistant of the Stadtheater St. Gallen (Switzerland), then under the direction of Manfred Taubert. Responsible for classes and rehearsals, in February 1986 she ascended to the post of Ballet director and Ballet master. Present in her career is the sense of dance and music of course, but also literature. To remember: the première of Ein-Sam, a choreography about the work of Samuel Beckett (Nobel Prize of Literature 1969), created for his 80th. birthday celebration with music of W. Haupt. Special permissions of the editors Fischer and Suhrkamp. Worth to mention too is her performance as choreographer assistant and dancer in Rilke: Paolo Bertoluzzi – about the celebrated poet.
Back to Germany, at the Staatstheater Oldenburg she was appointed responsible for the Company classes, rehearsals and choreographies. Among these: Der Tanz mit den 7 Schleiern, (Salomé Oper, music of Richard Strauss), and Illusions, music of W. Haupt. In reconstruction, her first ballet, the second part of Punkt-Kontrapunkt. In creation, Thanatos (music of Requiem Canticles, Igor Stravinski, under excerpts of Fragmentos’ poems, of Ezra Pound, original music from Hugues Le Bars). Soon, she would decide to open her own school of dance, as ever in Munich. Celi Barbier Art Studio and Art Gallery turned out to be a “point” of classical ballet, painting expositions and concerts, attracting to Munich international renowned artists. For five consecutive years, workshops were also open to the participation of the “famous” dance world: Gilbert Mayer (Classic Dance), Carol Cohen (Martha Graham technic), Duane Cyrus (Alvin Ailey), Rick Odums (Jazz), Eneida and Nilton Castro (Afro-Brazilian Dances).
Most of her work is centred in Munich. So, in this context, parallel activities also count. Worth to mention: a documentary film for the German television about Maurice Béjart, during his creation of Le Concours. Not to forget the remarkable list of celebrated choreographers with her in the journey: Ratmansky, Neumeier, Jude, Malandain, Schläpfer, Thoss, Maillot, Bigonzetti, de Candia, Bianco. Her selected ‘Portraits’ honour dance personalities: Tatiana Leskova, Irina Jacobson, Charles Jude, Lucia Lacarra and Uliana Lopatkina. Uliana, the memory of 15 years following the Mariinski Ballet at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden a complete coverage.
Classical dance, her signature. Multilingual, this perfect association concedes Mrs. Barbier to enlarge her interests to the diversity of cultures and ethnic themes, expressed in an unique choreographic vocabulary. This induced her beyond frontiers so much as guest professor (five countries, national ballet companies) as member of Jury in international contests. Very important to mention are her activities as chatterer to diffuse the history and techniques of dance abroad. The 25 years of writing for Dança Brasil confirm. She will continue, there is a book in course: her own biography.
